What are my Responsibilities?

As a home owner your primary responsibility is to ensure that if you have knotweed on your land it should not be allowed to spread onto an adjacent property.

Currently it is not illegal to have Japanese Knotweed on your property and provided that you don’t allow it to grow in to a neighbors land then nobody can make you do anything about it.

What do I do if it’s growing in to my property from adjacent land?

The law will be on your side if you enter in to dispute with a neighbor who has allowed Japanese Knotweed to grow on to your land.

However our best advice would always be to keep friendly! Try and discuss the problem with your neighbor – advise them of the problems and discuss how best to deal with the problem (at their expense!). It is always easier to come to an agreed compromise than to go shouting the law at people. It can also occasionally backfire as well - should the origin of the infestation prove to have been on your property not theirs!

How do I get rid of it?
